Referees appointed for the Manawatu Associated croquet tournament are Mcsdames Gambrill, Corbridge, and Eobcrtson. The Daily Mail’s Home correspondent states that the poet Gabriele d’Annunzio is seriously ill, pneumonia supervening on influenza, says a London cablegram.
The following visitors were welcom ed at the Citizens’ Luncheon Club yes terday. Messrs. A. Skelton (Wellington), W. W. Sutton, J. T. Martin, E. Connor, P. L. Sim, N. D, Stubbs and A. C. Parsons (Palmerston North). Congratulations to Messrs. G. A Mills, E, A. .Eobbie, and B. A. Eodgers, past probationers of the school in having obtained their B.A. degrees, were extended by the Central School Committee last evening. At yesterday’s meeting of the Citizens Luncheon Club, the secretary, Mr J. H. Stevens, voiced the club’s regret at the approaching departure from Palmerston North of Mr G. S Lcedcr, a well known member of the club. The Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs has appointed Mr. Kobert Vansittart assistant Under-Secretary of State , states a Eugby wireless. _ Mr. Lancelot Oliphant has been appointed acting-assistant Under-Sccretary in his place. Mr. James M‘Neill, ihe newly-ap-pointed Governor-General of the Irish Free State, who on Friday underwent a slight operation in a London nursing home, is reported by a Eugby wireless to be making satisfactory progress toward recovery. The Honorable W. Nosworthy arrived in Napier last evening bj car from the Waikato district, via Eotorua and Taupo. He leaves this morning for Waikaremohna to inspect as Minister in Charge of Tourist Ecsorts, the recent improvements to the Lake house. — Press Association.
Mr. E. Bary, Central School's new headmaster, was accorded a welcome at the meeting last evening of the school committee, which he attended for the first time. “It will be my endeavour to uphold the good position that the school has attained,”, stated Mr. Bary in returning thanks. The Central School Committee last evening passed a vote of thanks to Mr. H. F. Gabitcs, first assistant, who had carried on the work of the school so successfully pending the arrival of tho new headmaster, Mr. E. Bary. The committee decided to convey its congratulations by letter and forward a copy to the Education Board for its information. Mr. Bary also spoke in appreciation of the good work Mr, Gabites had accomplished.
The Governor-General, Sir Charles Fergusson, was joined at Government House, Auckland on Monday, by Lady Alice Fcrgusson. After their visit to the South Island Lady Alice Fergusson ivent to .Rotorua, where she spent a few days visiting the thermal regions before going to Auckland. Her Excellency was accompanied by Miss Dugdale and Lord Waleran. Mrs. G. Baird, of Scotland, Sir Charles Fergusson’s sister, who has been on a visit to the Dominion for the past two months, also joined Their Excellencies. Rev. H. T. Feat, chairman of the Central School Committee, tendered his resignation last evening in view of his approaching transfer to Timaru. Members of the committee spoke in terms of praise for the services Rev. Peat had given to the school during the last six years. In a letter received from the late headmaster, Mr. F. L. do Berry, touched upon Rev. Peat’s resignation and stated that no school had been better served by a chairman than had Central by Rev. Peat. His enthusiasm for the cause of the child, his unbounded energy, his cheerful helpfulness, his undoubted ability, and the high ideals which he always set, had been at the service of Central and the school was the richer for the contact of his personality.
