SURPLUS TEACHERS
JJi WAMUAJNUX iSUAiUI At Wednesday nights meeting of the Wanganui Education Board the report of the board’s secretary, Mr. W. H. Swangcr showed that the number of unemployed teachers in the Wanganui district was becoming a serious matter, Mr. Swianger in his report said: “Thirty-nine students who were previously in the service of tho board left the training colleges at tho end of last year. There were also five who had taught elsewhere, but whose homes are in the district, and who applied for employment. This makes a total of 44. Of these, four have received permanent appointments in this district and one in tho Wellington district, Twenty-eight have been appointed as sustbituted assistants. These are temporary appointments, and will expire on January 31 next. These teachers may apply for advertised vacancies during the year, anl no doubt a good many of them will secure positions. This leaves 11 not provided for. Of these, however, five do not appear to have applied for employment, and it is fair to assume that they have secured appointments in other. districts. The position is, therefore, that six exstndeots are without appointments. One of these has relieving work which will last about two weeks. I wish to point out that when an ex-student secures a permanent appointment a vacancy for a substituted assistant is creeled. Jn filling such vacancies tho board is required by the department to give preference to ex-students. There is, I think, good prospects of tho six unemployed ex-students being placed in positions before long. Eive ex-students were selected by the department for appointment by probationary assistants and these have been placed in positions. The appointment of 27 certificated teachers who were probationary assistants or substituted assistants last year expired at the end of the year. Of these, two have received appointments. Eight of these are on the relieving staff. It will probably be considerably reduced at the end of the current month. Summarized, the position is that 25 certificated teachers are .without employment of any kind, and 16 are engaged in relieving work. I estimate that the number of unemployed teach-
ers at the beginning -of next month will be about 35.”
