MEETING or COUNCIL. Tho Kiwitea County Council met at Kimboltou on Wednesday, Councillor L. T. McLean (chairman) presiding. There were also present Councillors W. P. Shaw, F. O. Stack, J. A. T. Brown, J. A. Williamson, D. L. Younger, W. Hair, N. V. Shannon, and T. D. Wood. Correspondence. The Hollowing correspondence was dealt with:— From the Mayor of Wellington, requesting the council’s co-opcration in the matter o£ obtaining subscriptions for the dependents of Lieutenant Moncrieff and Captain Hood, who lost their lives in the attempt to fly the Tasman Sea. —List to ho opened at county office. From the clerk, Kairanga County Council, forwarding £64 14/5, being council’s portion of the heavy traffic license fees collected for tho quarter ended 31st Dcomber, 1927.—Received. From the Public Works Department, advising payment of subsidy on unemployed relief work, amounting to £4B/14/7. —Received. From the district engineer, Public Works Department ,rc claims for subsidies on highway and road works, and advising that applications must bo made not later than the 24th of March, if payment is desired before the end of the financial year.—Received. From the district engineer Public Works Department, forwarding schedule showing grants allocated for the year 1927-2 S, namely: Mangakukeke Road £SO, Mangoira stream bridge £350. —Received. Rate Position. The county treasurer reported that of the general rates levied for the year ending March 31, 1925, 17420 7/4 had been paid .leaving outstanding £3784 ilO/C of tho special rates struck For the same period £ISGS 15/1 had been paid, leaving outstanding £1154 12/1. Overseer s Report. The county overseer reported as follows: — Cheltenham Riding.—The contract for the regrading and metalling of the cutting- on the Boaconslicld Road wil 1 ho completed in a few days’ time. The new metal on the Cheltenham Cross and Boaconsflold Valley Roads has been blinded with clay, and the usual maintenance to all roads has received attention. Tho Kimboltou Road and a section of the Cheltenham Cross Road have been trimmed with the grader. Tenders have boon called for the supply and delivery of maintenance metal on Haye’s Lino. Waituna Riding.—The surface man hast attended to the usual maintenance work; also assisting with the removal of the largo slip on the Mangapapa Road and the metalling work in the Pcep-o’-Day Riding. Tenders have been called for the supply and delivery of maintenance metal on Pakihikura Road. Kiwitea Riding.—The work in this riding has been confined to carting out maintenance metal with the county dump trucks and very good progress has been made. 275 cubic yards have been delivered on Kimbolton Road from tihe Kimboltou pit: 120 cubic yards on to Bryce s Road and 30 cubic yards ou Perry’s Line, making a total quantity delivered in this riding during the last three weeks of 42 5 cubic yards. I hope to complete all the necessary maintenance metalling in this riding in about 10 days’ time . A section of the Main Highway has also received attention with tho grader. Onga Riding.—With the exception of renewing a small culvert and minor repairs to the approach to the bridge at Waituna. .no work has been done in this riding- during the past month. Kimboltou Hiding.—Approximately nine chains of kerbing and channelling have been completed, and the balance of work arranged for with contractor is held up temporarily owing principally to a shortage of water. During the mor&th the county dump trucks have delivered 76 cubic yards of maintenance metal on to the Main Highway: also 21 yards ou the sideroads, making a, total quantity delivered of 97 cubic yards. A start will he made delivering maintenance metal on the Oroua Valley Road Main Highway as soon as the metalling in ■Uie Kiwitea raiding is completed. Pecp-o’-Day Riding—The surfaceman on the eastern section of this riding has assisted with the stripping ot' the pit for metal carting in Kiwi--I,m ;md Kimboltou Ridings. The usual surface work and cutting hack of fern on Peop-o’-Day Road lias also, received alien,lion. On I lie western seel ion of this riding i he large slip on | Alangapapa Road lias been removed ; and the road-opened to all traffic. A|,

bridge ou the Rakihiknra. Road lias been strengthened with running twoincli planking, and is now in sound condition. A start has been made delivering maintenance metal on the Kiwitea-Tapnac Road with the dump truck.
