FLAXMILLING
MILLERS’ EXECUTIVE MEETS A meeting of the executive of the Flaxmillers’ Association was held in Foxton yesterday when there were present: Messrs H. A. Seifert ((in the chair), A. Ross, J. F_ Moir, A. Fraser, A. A. Brown, W. Nyc, H. Berry and G. Brown. It was decided to send a letter of thanks to Mr E. li. Broad for his action in interviewing the Minister of Lands relative to having flax classed as an improvement when assessing the value of land for rates. The Valuation of Land Act now before the House will bring this amendment into being.
I Almost every mill in the Wellington • province is now represented; also a number of outside members have joined up under the new scheme of country membership. It was resolved to endeavour to increase the membership still further. . The chairman reported that Mr Herman Seifert and ho had waited upon the Minister of Agriculture in connection with a Government bonus for improved methods of manufacture. Messrs Linklater and Rhodes M’s.P. had introduced them. An early reply had been promised but so far none had come to hand_ It was resolved that the chairman inquire into the matter when next in Wellington. The Arbitration Court came up for considerable discussion. The attitude of the Employers’ Association was explained and it was decided that tiro chairman should give evidence before the Labour Bills Committee, sotting forth the Association’s views. A letter was received from the Director of Agriculture agreeing to supply the Association with a set of sample hemp. Millers present offered to donate the fibre required. Letters rc grading were received from Mr A. A. Brown (Waikanac) and Dr A. H. Cockayne, Director of the Fields Division. Considerable discussion ensued and it was resolved that Messrs A. Ross H. Berry and the chairman be a committee of grading.
