ARMISTICE DAY
To-days Celebrations
To-day is the ninth anniversary of the closo of the Great World War of 1014—18, and in all parts of the Empire tho day will be devoted to services in memory of those who fell and of thanksgiving for the ceasing of the noise and destruction caused by the big artillery. All the members of the Palmerston North Defence staff will parade in connection with the service and two rounds of blank ammunition will bo fired from tho 18-poundcr gun, one to mark th e beginning of tho twominutes' silence and the other at the end of it.
The Mayor (Mr. A. J. Graham) will preside at the service at the memorial where the borough councillors and citizens will also assemble. Hevs. H. T. Peat, G. T. Brown, and J. Milburn Stewart will conduct the service. The Officers’ Club will be represented and on behalf of the members a wreath will be placed on the memorial by Major R. D. Hardie, the president. The order of service is a hymn, a Scripture reading by Rev. Harold T. Peat, a prayer by Rev. G. T, Brov.n, th e “Last Post” and “Reveille” by an ox-soldier member of tho ■ Garrison Band, and Benediction by Rev. J. Milburn Stewart.
Th 0 observance of Armistic e Da;’ in England'will be as follows: —(1) A short service will bo held at rhe cenotaph on the lines adoptee. i:i previous years, including the singing of the hymn, “O God, Our He p in Ages Past.” ‘His Majesty tho King will be present and will lay a wreath on the cenotaph. (2) Two minutes’ silence will be observed at 11 a.m. Local authorities throughout tho Dominion have been asked to arrange for the suspension of all vehicular traffic for two minutes from 11 a.m., but rail and water transport will not be suspended. The Chelmsford Empire experimental station SSW has definitely arranged for an Armistice Day broadcast as follows: — Twenty-four metres (all times Greenwich mean time) 10.45 to 11.15 forenoon service at Canterbury Cathedral; 12.30 to 1 in tho afternoon, organ recital Sain Mary, le Bow; 1 to 1.10 afternoon, address; 8 to 10 In the evening, ” Daily Express ” remembrance festival, Queen's Hall. The British Broadcasting Corporation’s engineers are most hopeful that the first three will reach Australia, hut are doubtful about the evening broadcast.
