OROUA DOWNS EN FETE

Animal Sports Gathering

SOME INTERESTING COM-

PETITIONS

Tho threatening weather in tho morning ,of yesterday did not deter all and sundry people within a radius of ten miles of Oroua Downs from making tho journey by horse, trap or car to tho paddock of Mr. Stratford where the eleventh annual sports meeting was held. In the early part of the afternoon; tho sun burst through tho clouds, and came off best in tho struggle for supremacy throughout tho afternoon.

The larger part of tho programme was taken up by horse events and the finishes proved in all cases exciting, especially in the races, where ono small boy on a miniature pony proved difficult to overtake in the finishes. The handsome Cup presented by J. F. McKelvie, Esq., was won by Mr. J. Shaw’s “Rita,” and Mr. J. Linklater. M.P., In making the presentation, referred to the association ot the pair over a period of some years. The donor of the Cup also came in for eulogistic remarks, the speaker stating that Mr. McKelvie had a real love for sport of any description, and he was always assured of a welcome at such gatherings. A feature of the programme was the manner in which tho children’s events were conducted, and the thanks of the committee and parents are duo to Messrs. F. Cousins and E. R. Chapman who made the journey from Palmerston North, for the purpose. That the children, who were marshalled in the centre of the arena' enioyed themselves was sufficient tribute to those gentlemen. . A ball wa s held in the evening, and this conclusion of a happy gymkhana left pleasant memories in tho minds of all who attended. I-lORSE EVENTS. Leaping competition (steeplechase style): L.
