EXCITING CRICKET
COLYTON SPRINGS SURPRISE OLD BOYS RATTLED BUT WIN. ALEX WALDIN’S CENTURY. Not since the keen contest between Feilding and Public Service last season has excitement in local cricket been so intense as that which developed on Kowhai Park on Saturday afternoon' when the Colyton eleven made a supreme bid for victory over High'School Old Boys. With 195 to their credit on their first strike Old Boys declared they had put on 117 with the loss of four wickets in their second innings, leafing the Country team 255 to get to win. This suggested a handsome victory for Old Boys and interest then mostly centred on the Public Service-Feildlng game. Colyton, however, went to the wicket undismayed and before long had lOld Boys leather hunting in a style rarely seen. With the long dry spell the outfield was particularly keen and anything that missed the fieldsmen's hands went sailing to the boundary at express speed. The batting honours of the day went to Alex Waldin, t who played a great Innings for 101, when he was caught by Cochrane off Telford. He punished every bowler and notwithstanding that the fieldsmen were placed out on the boundaries, his score continued to mount. Reid, who opened with Waldin, played judiciously,' hitting loose 'stuff and stonewalling anything on the wicket. With over sixty up ’ for ho wickets G. V. Wild, who was guarding the stumps, deciding to take a hand at the bowling and a quick change' with Whitehead was arranged. Reid found Wild’s slow delivery uncomfortable and he was clean bowled with the score at 76. George Darragh followed and this partnership' hurried the score along until Darragh was run out for 27. No two bats worked harder' during ' the partnership and both punished Wild’s deliveries. Shepherd was Waldin’s next partner, but he got baffled and went down to Wild. MacLeod followed and was doing nicely when he was. caught by Amadio off Wild. Waldin was still maintaining the pace when Thurston t(/as,. according to the umpire, run out.- 'the dismissal of Thurston was an unsatisfactory incident of the game, many saw the incident contended that Thurston was not out as when the bowler kicked the the stumps with his foot he was not in possession of the leather. The next man .Lankshear was bowled By Telford. with what was claimed to be a “no ball” —another incident which rather spoilt a great battle by Colytbn. Waldin then reached his century which was marked by general applause and after hitting a single ho was, caught by Cochrane. Two members of the team were absent so that after Viles had been dismissed Power had to carry his bat for four and the game ended in victory for Old Boys by 6 wickets and 6 3 runs. • It was a memorable innings for both Colyton and the victors. ■... .. Feilding Again Beaten Public Service defeated, Feilding by 3 wickets and 91 runs. The winners made 174 in their first innings and declared when seven- wickets were down for 84 in their second strike. Feilding made a poor display in their first hit, being dismissed for 67.
