TERRACE END SCHOOL

Monthly Committee Meeting

The monthly meeting of the Terrace End School committee was held last evening, when Mr W. B. Cameron occupied Hie chair. Other members present were Messrs W. Hebden, J. Allen, G. J. McNeilc, W. Newlands, H. R. Smith, W. L. Maopherson, and Rev. J. H. Bredin (lion. sec.). Headmaster’s Report. The headmaster (Mr A. W. Thompson) reported that the roll number was 711, the average daily attendance being about 668. The annual examinations had been completed and progress cards had been issued to the parents. The proficiency examination was held and it was pleasing to report that in these examinations scholars of the school had acquitted themselves very creditably indeed. £4 5s 3d had been raised for the Jubilee Institute for the Blind.

On December 10, Mr. W. C. Collier, president of the Palmerston North branch of the Royal Life Saving Society .addressed the children of the upper classes, and presented lifesaving certificates to those pupils who had qualified during the year.

The headmaster acknowledged with thanks the gift of a silver cup from a present pupil and her brother, Vera and Ernest Jones. The cup was presented with the object of encouraging swimming among the girls, and is the permanent property of the school, to be competed for annually. The headmaster could not commend too highly the spirit shown by these pupils, and trusted that their action would be rewarded by many pupils improving their ability in the water. The footways put down by the Borough Council were proving a decided success, and the risk of accident from vehicular traffic had been greatly diminished. In conclusion Mr. Thompson extended on behalf of himself and the staff, best wishes to all for the coming festive season. General. The breaking-up ceremony will take place on Friday at 11 a.m., and several members of the committee expressed their intention of being present. The question of extending the number of cubicles in the baths was discussed, and it was decided to postpone any action until enquiries were made as to whether the Education Board's architect could not undei’take the work. Matters pertaining to the school picnic, which is to be held on Februaxy 4 at Ashhurst, were discussed, and from all reports everything indicated that all arrangements were well in hand.

Authority was given to purchase material for the making of three devices for the teaching of swimming to the children.

It was decided to apply to the Education Board after an interview with the Board’s architect, to have the “shack” demolished and the Infant department moved to a more suitable locality, where it would not hinder arrangements for tho beautifying of the school grounds and the laying out of the playing areas.

The thanks of the committee are to be tendered to the headmaster and the staff for the excellent record In the examinations as,a result of tho great amount of work done by tho teachers.

Several speakers expressed their appreciation of the action of the two pupils in presenting the swimming cup, and a letter of thanks is to be forwarded to them.
