AN HISTORIC CASTLE
FAMILY HOME RESTORED. The story of an ancient and historic house allied to the ducal family of Argyll, but reduced to poverty after the Battle of Waterloo, is recalled by a clause in the will of Sir Duncan Alexander Dundas Campbell, Bt., the holder of numerous offices. , : Sir Duncan, who lived for some years at Ridgway Place, Wimbledon, was hereditary keeper of Barcaldlo Castle, at one time Gentleman Usher of the Green Hod, and afterwards secretary of the Order of the Thistle, a member of the King’s Bodyguard of Scotland, and of the Royal Company of Archers, and Garrick Pursuivant of Arms. He was the author of “The Clan Campbell.” He left property valued at £5428, including the castle and barony of Barcaldinc, which was sold in 1842, but which, after along struggle, he was able to buy back in 1896. A ;special clause in Sir Duncan’s will says: “I hope that those who come after me will endeavour to respect my wishes and keep together what I have with much difficulty and anxiety brought together after the trouble which bcfel the family in my grandfather’s time, when the largo estates had to bo sold and the family wore brought to penury.”
