POLITICS IN UNITED STATES

Mud-Slinging as Party Weapon

CAMPAIGN OF CALUMNY

[By Electric Cable —Gopyritrl. 1

[Aust. and N.Z. Cable Association.!

(Received Monday, 7 p.m.) WASHINGTON, Oct. 31

As is usual in American political campaigns, when an election draws near personal a buse and mud-slinging becomes rife.

The present contest is no exception, even the name of the President being bandied aoout, and candidates Kir tne office referring to each other by vicious names, while insinuations are passing concerning their private lives.

Aspirants for the office report that President Coolidge disfavoured the Republican Senatorial candidate for Illinois because tho latter is alleged to have received large campaign funds from interested public utilities and corporations. This led the candidate to reply, despite President Coolidge’s denials, that the Presidents’ campaign of 1924 was also financed by steel, wool, sugar and other large corporate interests.

The Now York State campaign has degenerated Into an ugly spectacle Messrs. Smith ■ and Mills, opponents for the Governorship, both usually able and dignified men, making charges, counter charges and references to each other’s private lives, until Mr. Mills apologised. Politics dominate all interests throughout the country. The bitterness of the fight between the two parties is likely to continue to the. last minute.
