BANK CLERK’S THEFTS
MISSING SHARES AND SLOW HORSES. [Per Press Association.] CHRISTCHURCH, Oct. 29. For stealing £2OOO belonging to the', National Bank of New Zealand, William Henry Melvin, was sentenced to-, day to be detained for reformative treatment for three years. Mr Sargent, who appeared for Melvin, said that he was 27 years of ago and had been employed in the bank 11 years. He was an exceedingly capable officer. Melvin had speculated in mining shares as well as Slow horses. Mr. Justice Stringer: What was this young man’s salary? i Mr. Sargent: It was £BOO a year. He is single. His Honour said that the prisoner had robbed his employers by a systematic manipulation of the bonk records. It was. necessary to Impose a, substantial sentence.
