MAGISTRATE’S COURT
YESTERDAY’S BUSINESS. Mr. R. M. Watson, S.M., presided over yesterday’s sitting of the Magistrate’s Court. illegal Sale of Cigarettes. Prosecutions for breaches of the Shops and Offices Act were preferred against several shopkeepers. Inspector Lowden, who prosecuted, stated that as a result of reports of the illicit sales of tobacco by certain shops in Feilding, an investigation was made with the result that it was found that shops who failed to observe the statutory half-holiday ryere selling cigarettes.
Hop Lee Bros. (Mr. J. Graham), admitted the charge, although counsel pointed out that the inspector had not disclosed which shop was guilty of the offence. Two shops were run under the name of Hop Lee, but were controlled by Wong Mong. However, defendant undertook not to stock cigarettes again. A line of i 5 and costs was imposed. Similar tines were imposed on T. Anderson and Long Kee, whilst K. Moroney, proprietress of a small refreshment shop, who had only recently gone into business, was ordered to pay a fine of £2 and costs. Other Cases. William Prouse was fined 10s and costs for riding a bicycle at night without a light. On a charge of failing to produce his license to drive a motor vehicle, E. A. Johnston was fined 20s and costs. Judgment by Default. Judgment for plaintiff by default was given in the following cases;— H. P. Hitchman v. H. Trevena, 9s 3d, costs 8s; Burrell and Hurrant v. H. Avery, £3 6s, costa £1 3s 6d: J. W. Sporle V. W. T. Sapsford, £2 2s 9d, costs £1 3s 6d; E. H. Brewer v. J. Mansfield, £lO 2s. costs £2 Its; same v. P. G. Cross, costs only £1 7s; P. P. Stevens v. T. H. Murphy, £1 IBs Id, costs 16s. Judgment Summons. C. J. Tarrant was ordered to pay C. H. Bunker the sum of £l4 11s in instalments of £2 per month, in default 14 days’ imprisonment in the Wellington gaol. Alfred Prince was ordered to pay H. J. Barnicoat the sum of £7 15s by instalments of £1 per month, in default 10 days’ imprisonment in the Wellington gaol. By-Law Cases. Cases concerning breaches of the FeUding Borough by-laws w'ere adjourned for hearing on Monday next.
