GOVERNMENT'S DUTY IN COAL STRIKE

Bnmid to Seek Possible Settlement

BUT FAIRNESS TO BOTH SIDES ESSENTIAL

[By Electric Cable —Copyright.] [Aust. and N.Z. Cable Association.] BONBON, Oct. 27.

Sir W. Joynson-Hicks, in a speech at Aylesbury, said that some people considered it was not the Government’s duty to interfere in the coal strike in the way that the Government had done, but the Government was bound to try to bring the terrible dispute to an end. It had failed, but it was no use having another conference when the minors refused to face the economic facts. He added that the Government was determined to maintain peace. While one minor desired to work the Government would use the whole of its resources to protect him. "It Mr. Cook asks the miners to obey a Council of War in opposition to the Government, I toll him that the resources of civilisation are not exhausted.” MIXERS’ EXECUTIVE. TO MEET TRADES COB'NCIB. BONBON, Oct. 27. Following upon the Trades Union Council’s interview with Mr. Baldwin, the Trades B’nion General Council decided to ask the miners’ executive to meet them at the earliest possible moment. It is stated that the object is to secure authority for the Miners’ Federation to ask the Government to summon a conference of the coal owners and the miners to discuss a settlement on the basis of the Coal Commission’s report.
