MELBOURNE TO SOUTH ISLAND
MEW STEAMSHIP SERVICE SUGGESTED. [For Press Association.] CHRISTCHURCH, Hast Nip-lit. Asked by a reporter to-day if the Government contemplated making a move in the direction of establishing a direct line of steamers from the South Island ports to Melbourne, or had considered subsidising such a service, the Acting-Prime Minister (Hon. W. Downic Stewart) said that the matter had been considered from time to time. "But,” he added, “no feasible scheme has been put forward which would not involve the Government. in an expenditure, when the results of such a service to the Do-minioa.as.-a whole, wore not justified,”
