ATTACKED BY A LION
BOY’S ARM LACERATED, DRAGGED INTO A CAGE. SYDNEY, Aug. 2G. While Perry Brothers were unloading wild animals at Orango for their circus performance Patrick Burke, aged 32, was among a number of boys who were watching the proceedings. Burke was standing near the wheel of a travelling cage containing a lioness when the paw of the animal suddenly shot out through a hole Sin. wide, at the bottom of the cage. The claws caught the boy’s arm and dragged it through the hole into the cage. His screams attracted the attention of Eric Hailoy. the station night officer, and John Waiters, manager of the railway re freshment room. They rushed the cage and while, Walters held the boy, Hailoy attempted to beat the lioness off. with a piece of iron. A passenger train was at the station at the time and a large crowd of horrified passengers watched the fight. Eventually the lioness was forced to release its grip and the boy was rushed to the hospital, whole ho was admitted suffering from terrible lacerations about tlie arm and hand. The doctors hope to save the limb. The lioness, which was bought by Perry Brothers 33 months ago, came from the Alalay States.
