BY APPOINTMENT
It. is the pardonable ambition of every loyal tradesman in Great Britain lo hang (he Royal Arms over his shopfront, with the magic words "By Appointment” appended, states the Daily Chronicle.’ A voluminous list of (those warrants, of forty pages, has just been published by the ‘London Gazette,’ but it includes, in addition (o the tradesmen supplying goods to the King and Queen, the Frinco of Wales, and the Royal household, the names also of (hose who used to serve King Edward and Queen Victoria. A diminishing band, these. latter, and there is one name among them which is almost incredible. It is well known that Her Maejcsty regarded smoking with the greatest aversion, and that persons had to conceal from her a habit which she regarded not as vicious, bijt merely vulgar. Yet third on the list of those tradesmen entitled to style themselves "By appointment to the late Queen Victoria” is a well-known firm of tobacconists. The King and Queen have (heir separate lists of tradesmen—there arc very few "doubles” among them. The variety of His Mejcsty’s wants arc shown in a few names taken at random: Chiropodist, posting master, shirt makers, seedsmen, gunmakers, hairdressers, hatters, plumbers, hot house manufacturers, lamb tood manufacturers.
Her Majesty’s tradesmen comprise: Printsellers, costumiers, silk mercers, robe makes, lace makers, cleaners dyers, watch and clock makers, chocolate manufacturers, publishers and printers, sports outfitters, jewellers, florists, purveyors of china.
Naturally enough, some of the tradesmen who hold warrants of appointment to the Prince of Wales arc to be found abroad—in India, China, Canada, Ceylon, Malta, Japan—but the. great bulk of them arc British, and London at that. The Prince is not one of those exalted persons who "do not read ithe newspapers." A firm of news-agents is among his tradesmen, also a firm of Press cutting agents. If all the cuttings are preserved, they must already form a nol inconsiderable library.
