GIRL CITIZENS
DOMINION CAMP AT AWAPUNI. During the last few weeks, members of the Palmerston North Board of Directors of the Y.W.C.A. have .been busy making preparations for; the annual Dominion Girl Citizens’ camp, which opens to-day at the Awapunl racecourse. Generous donations of food have been made by local firms and private individuals and the racecourse officials have spared no effort to make the visitors as comfortable as possible. Eighty-flvo delegates will attend the camp. All these with the exception of the counsellors, are Girl Citizens between '.the ages’kof 14 and 20, and they have come representing the various local) Girl Citizen communities of the ©qpvlnion. The camp will be under the direction of Miss Della \V. Bridgman, National Chief Counsellor of the movement, and she will be assisted by a very able group of chief counsellors. Mrs O. E. Burton will act as hostess. All the girls will be divided into tribes or clans, each of which will choose its own girl chieftain, who will be responsible for the -discipline of her group. In addition to this, various committees of girls will be formed to attend to such matters as music, hospitality, recreation, health and cup events. Those committees are elected by the Girl Citizens and work under th chairmanship qf girls. A most interesting programme has been arranged. The morning will be occupied in Bible study, discussion of the movement and making plans for this year’s work throughout the Dominion; An ■ important feature Will be,.the leadership..training corps fo counsellors. The; afternoon will will bo glvpn up to sport and recreation. A great amount of time will be. given to a cup contest. The Girl ■Citizen Cup is competed for each year and every delegation comes with "Sager hope and strong determination to win the coveted honour of being the holder of the trophy for the ensuing year. The events for the confer counsellors. The afternoon will performances, story-telling, the composition of an original Girl Citizen song, sports, poster drawing,'■. and a uniform parade. 7
The opening meeting will take the form of a fire ceremonial, when a friendship fire will be kindled aiyl •the lighting of the fire will be used to express, in symbolic form, the spirit of the gathering. ... A cordial invitation- is. extended to any residents of Palmerston North to visit the camp any afternoon or evening.
