MANAWATU GOLF CLUB

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING. The annual general meeting of the Manawatu Golf Club was held in the Racing Club’s office last evening, the retiring president (Mr. F. J. Nathan), occupying tho chair. The annual report, after dealing with the interest displayed in competition for the Wilson and Nathan Cups, deplored tho fact that difficulty had been experienced in getting teams to travel away from homo, Ihis fact militating against the arrangement of future matches. This year the proceeded, it is confidently expected that there will be a large attendance of visiting golfers at the annual tournament, which will bo hold on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Monday immediately preceding tho New Zealand championship. Our own championship was won by A. E. Ekstedt—this for the third successive year. He continues to play great golf, and if only he got sufficient practice, would ibe equal to any amateur golfer in New Zealand. Mr. Galloway, our professional, continues to give every satisfaction. Ho is a moat able coach, and there is no doubt that he had improved the standard of play in the Club. We must congratulate him bn his success at tho professionals’ tournaments in which he has taken part. An Easter tournament was held for the first time in the Club’s history and was a complete success. We must thank Mrs. Louis Seifert for the very! great assistance she gave to the act-ing-secretary t at this tournament, which was won by G. Saunders, with H. L. Young as runner-up. The annual tournament in September was won by J. Duncan and the runner-up was L. Seifert. The Club championship was again won by A. E. Ekstedt, S. W. Rapley being runner-up. T. Stubbs, won the middle-weight championship, with Ronald Abraham as runner-up. H. W. Kerr took the junior championship, E. Osterman being runner-j up. The McHardy and Plunket Cups for the most points in the monthly medal and bogey competition, were won by R. W. Cumberworth and T. Stubbs respectively. The Druce, and Cooper and Rapley Cups for most points in the monthly medal and bogey competitions for the long handicap players, were won by J. G. Bagnail and J. J. Stevenson respectively, while the Mander Cup, for the most points in the two events combined, was won by J. G. Bagnall. The Nathan Cup was won by T. Stubbs, the McLennan Cup by R. Cumberworth and T. Stubbs, the B. and A. Cup by W. L. Fltzherbert, and the Barraud Service Cup by R. P. Abraham. The balance-sheet showed a credit of £l2O 12s 7d. A sum of £25 17s taken into profit last year had been written off, and £75 7s lid allowed for depreciation, making the actual profit on the year’s working £221 17s 6d. In moving the adoption of tho report and balance-sheet, Mr. Nathan congratulated the Club on the fact that It had finished up with a satisfactory financial balance. “I had been Interested to find out,” said Mr. .Nathan, “and Mr. Spear assisted mo in the work as to when the Club had previously made a financial success of its year’s working. I was not able to go back far enough, but In 1917 we were fairly close, as, we lost only £l.” In speaking of the improvement to the Club’s premises, the chairman stated that the Government valuation of these was £7875. A certain amount of bunkering had been carried out during the year, and although the work was not completed, a scheme of complete bunkering had been drawn up by the committee and Mr. Galloway. This would require a three to four years’ programme, but when It was finished, tho links would be among the best in New Zealand.
