WANGANUI WOOL SALE

DALGETY AND COMPANY, LTD,

The fourth and. final main sale of the 1326-2 G season was held on Monday, the usual largo bench of buyers being in attendance.

Considering tho quality and condition of the offering, prices recorded were fully up to those reported from Napier, and southern centres. Tho majority of the parcels catalogued, as is usual in late sales, were Very mixed in quality, heavy in condition and seed much in evidence. Low Bradford top-making wools predominated with a fair sprinkling of lines suitable for Continental Requirements. Super American sorts, except for a few odd lots from the Manawatu, were missing

Competition for all lots free from seed was fairly brisk,. Bradford and the .Continent being well to tho fore with good support from Prance on the best class of lambs’ wool and pieces. Germany took a fair quantity of the rougher wools, and their competition was valuable. Passings were at times fairly numerous, many growers not feeling disposed to accept brokers’ valuations.

Reports received from London on the sales at present in progress have been rather contradictory, and it Is evident that at the moment the trade are not satisfied that a general stability has been reached. No doubt the unsatisfactory state of French finance has had an upsetting influence on the market. Successive Governments there have so far failed In their efforts to deal with the country’s financial problem, and the consequent uncertainty as to the future course of the rate of exchange is causing traders there to adopt a waiting policy. Germany without doubt is requiring considerable quantities of the raw material, but the industry there has only limited capital with which to finance its purchases. At the moment It does not appear as if any sharp rise in the price ,of the textile can be looked for, and many growers who arc refusing to-day’s prices may have to hold a long time before they better same. Wool this year throughout Australia and New Zealand has not been forced on the market in unduly large quantities, and buyers h*ave been given every opportunity to secure reasonable requirements to suit their finance. Growers -generally favour the limitation of offerings, and their assistance Is welcomed. Many recognise that at the present time it Is very necessary to ration the offerings carefully, especially as the trade has not yet recovered from the heavy losses of 1925. Even- when the financial position is sounder it Is doubtful whether wool growers, acting on the advice of woolbrokers, will run the risk of lowering prices by forcing the sale of their raw material.

Our offering 1 totalled 1720 bales, the passed in lots in most cases carrying growers’ prohibitive reserves. We had very few really good crossbreds, the majority of the catalogue containing coarse heavyconditioned parcels. An exception was a clip from Palmerston district, P.M.H. This was nice soft handling Romney, good colour, well grown, sound and light in condition, which sold as under: 3 bales AA 15id, 5 bales A 14id, 5 bales B ltd, 3 bales 0 12d. This clip was well suited for the American trade.
