IMMODESTY IN FRANCE
FASHIONS FOR AVOAFEN, A CAMPAIGN FOR REFORM. A Roman Ca|tholic school for stylo, which would combine elegance and charm with modesty, is advocated as an antidote for present “immodest” styles by Catholic circles in France. It is suggested that, as most of the world’s styles emanate from Paris, such an ins/titution should bo founded there, and that, in the future, new fashions should bo based oh lines conforming to Catholic ideas of propriety. The Bishop of Qulmper has stated his belief in the need for a reforma, tion of style, but favours concerted action on the part of Catholic women. rather than the establishment of an official institution. “The only remedy, in my opinion,” he is quoted as saying, “would be for the women of France to arrange for the adoption of a style—a Cajtholic style, if you will—which the couturiers would be obliged to follow. We can never efficiently combat the present styles until we substitute others. “When Catholic France shows the way in this fight for modesty Catholic America will follow."
