NOXIOUS WEEDS
BETTER REMEDY SUGGESTED. MAGISTRATE FAVOURS TRIBUNAL OP FARMERS.
After hearing several cases regarding breaches of the. Noxious Weeds Act at the Wanganui Magistrate’s Court yesterday, Mr J. S. Barton, S.M., said that the present procedure provided by the Act was satisfactory in a district where only a few cases came up for hearing, but in a district like Wanganui, where there were , numerous cases, and where the land in some instances was in grave danger of deterioration as a result of the spread of noxious weeds, the, procedure was inadequate. He would like to see a special tribunal of farmers set up who wotlld realise the danger of the spread of noxious growths, and expedite remedial measures. In a number of cases, the Magistrate said, evidence was brought forward which was of a conflicting nature. It was made to appear (hat the officers of the Agriculture Department wer e over-zealous. Other machinery was provided in the Act. by which the Department could, where default was made by the occupier, enter upon the land and do the work of removing noxious weeds at the cost of the occupier.
