“PRESIDENT ROOSEVELT” IN ENGLAND

BRAVE AMERICANS WARMLI WELCOMED. [By Electric Cable —Copyright.] [Aust~ and N.Z. Cable Association.] (Received Sunday 11.5 p.m) LONDON. February 7. “President Roosevelt" from Bremen made a special call of a few hours at Southampton and received a memorable welcome. Sir Cunliffe Lister specially visited captain Fried, declaring he was commanded by the King to express regret that the short stay did not permit him to come to London to receive His Majesty’s personal thanks in connection with the rescue of the Antlnoe’a crew, which had earned the gratitude of the whole British Empire. It had already taken a place in the annals of the sea as an epic service. It had done more than could be realised to cement the long friendship and lasting peace between Britain and America.

Sir Cunliffe Lister presented a gold box to Captain Fried, and gold medals from the British Government to mem. bers of the lifeboat crews. It was announced the wireless broadcasting company's story of the rescue had produced £326 fot dependants of the two drowned sailors.
