' Another Dominion Record Lowered

A. B. BAIRD ACHIEVES ANOTHER SUCCESS

Another New Zealand record was lowered at the Dominion swimming championships to-night. This time Miss K. Miller (Otago) clipped onefifth of a second off the record held by Mias J. Bell (Auckland) for the 220 yards intermediate girls’ championship, covering the distance in 2.57 2-5. Results:—

Men’s diving championship (holder, W. Keesing, of Canterbury): R. Calder (Otago) 1, H. Walker (Otago) 2, W. Hicks (Wellington) 3. Also competed; T. Geddis (Hawke’s Bay), T. Thomson tOtago), C. Riovdan (Canterbury).

220 yards intermediate girls’ championship (New Zealand record time 2min., 57 3-6 secs.) by Miss J. Bell (Auckland), also holder of championship. hinal: Miss K. Miller (Otago) 1, Miss E. Miss Miller early forged bar way to the front and at the end of the first 100 yards, had a two yards’ advantage from Misses Jepson, Champion, Simmonds, Parquhar and Whyman. Miss Champion headed Mias Jepson in the next lap and sat off after Miss Miller, drawing level with a lap and a-half to go. Then followed one of the finest races of the championships. Misses Miller and Champion, swimming stroke for stroke, turned together for the filial twenty yards and amidst the' greatest excitement, Miss Miller just won by a touch. 880 yards men’s championship (New Zealand record time llmin., 59 2-ssecs., by A. E. Baird, of Auckland, holder of championship. E. V. Cunnold, of Auckland): A. E. Baird (Auckland) 1. D. P. Lindsay (Canter-bui-y) 2, L. Enwright (Auckland) 3. Time, l2mih., 2 3-ssecs. Also started: E. Y. Gunnold (Auckland), L. Hill (Canterbury),, H. S. Weston (Taranaki). Enwright set out to be the pacemaker and had the lead for the first 300 yards. Eaiird then set out to force the pace, drawing level with Enwright just as they completed the half distance. With only 100 yards to go, Lindsay was swimming well two yards behind the Aucklander, who, however, held too much in reserve. With increased pace over th 0 last bit, Baird drew out to win by 12 yards from Lindsay. Enwright yas five yards away.
