BOROUGH VALUATIONS
TOTAL NOT AVAILABLE. PROBABLE RATE REDUCTION. In connection with the new valuations for the Borough of Feildlng. the Town Clerk (Mr N. C. Harding) has received the following telegram from the Valuer-General In reply to an inquiry:— “Total valuation will be supplied with corrected roll after objections settled. Regret other urgent work and absence of number of staff precludes taking out provisional totals at present.” On being seen, the Mayor (Mr W. E. Carthew) stated that while it was impossible to give any definite figures owing to the Department being unable to supply the total oi the Borough, still, it seemed fairly evident that the amount in the £ of rates struck in next year would be reduced, owing to the apparent general increase in valuations. The Mayor further stated that he could only repeat his previous statement, that it depended entirely upo* the individual increase, as compared with the increase over the whole ot the Borough, whether the rates on any particular property would be increased or not. Owing to the Valuation Department's inability to supply the figures, it was quite impossible to say what rate would be required to be struck next year.
