WAR MEMORIAL
ARRANGEMENTS FOR UNVEILING. A f 1411 meeting of the War Memorial Committee was he’.d yesterday after, noon, Mr. F. J. Nathan presiding. Reports showed that the memorial had been carefully erected by the contractors, and special reference wa.s made to the part played by the honor ary architect (Mr. E. V. West) in attending to the details of the erection The contractor’s comment on the memorial was that it is the finest of its kind in the Dominion.
A progress balance-sheet was submitted which showed the need for further funds to finish the ‘surround’’ to the statue. The Mayor said there ,vere still a number of leading residents who had not been given the opportunity of subscribing to the memorial, and he promised to interview them.
'The Mayor said it had been sug gested that as the Prime Minister would be in Palmerston North on Friday, December 18, for the High School prize-giving an endeavour should be made to get him to stay over till Saturday, when the unveillnv ceremony could be arranged. Mr. Nathan was deputed to Interview Mr. Coates on the matter.
A small committee was detailed to draw up the programme, and it was leoided that speeches be confined to Iho Mayor as chairman of the Memorial Committee, tits member for tho district and tha S’rima Mhuatar.
