MEETING OF COUNCIL. The, deputy-Mayor (Or. A. J Graham) presided at the meeting of the Palmerston North Borough, Coun. cil last evening. Also present were:— Crs. M. A. Eliott, J. Hod ens, v D. W. Low, H. Edwards, M. H. Oram, H, J. Canton, and W. L. Fitzherbert. Correspondence. From the Now Zealand Railways, with further reference to proposed rai way settlement, Mllson’s Line, asking that the water main be extended to serve the railway settlement in terms of the Council’s offer, and pre, sumlng there would be no objection on the part of the County Council to the main being laid on their roadway.—To be proceeded with m From the Palmerston North River District Board with regard to re. moval of noulders from river bed, and forwarding copy of a resolution: “That the Board approves of the Borough Council removing boulders from ‘he river "bed on the right bank be. tween Scandia street, find Pahlatua street, subject to the supervision of the Board’s engineer on the condition that the Borough makes its own contracts for supp'y of boulders with (he owners of the river bed so af. fected." Cr. Hodgcns objected to the removal of boulders, as it might possibly endanger property a, little higher np the river. The Electrical Committee reported that with further reference to the deputation representing the Palmerston North Retailors’ Association which waited upon the committee on Octo. ber 13, in reference to the charge per unit for window display lighting and the method of imposing the monthly minimum charge, it was decided to ap. prove of the adpotlon of the following revised charges. Charges for window display lighting' be reduced to 4d per unit; that the question of revising the method of imposing the minimum charge to bo re.considered before March 31, 1926; that file minimum char"-'’ for heating bo reduced to 1/a month.

Tlio Borough Engineer (Mr. J. R. Hu'hes) reported good progress in all street activities. There still remained a length of 21 chains of 12-inch sewer to be laid before the Hokowhitu con. tract would he completed. The value of building permits issued for the month of October was as follows: 17 private residences, £13,340; altera, tions and additions, £1,029; business premises. £6,212; other bui'dings, £399; total: £20,980. Fees collected amounted to £77 B/-. On the advice of the electrical com. mittee, it was decided to extend dis. bribution lines to Argyle and Garden streets, and that a s'reet light be erected at the corner of Matipo and Konlni streets. The engineer reported that 91 iobs had been passed during the month including 63 new consumers, making (lie total of these to date 2681. At the power station, 22,410 units had been generated and 194,540 units bought. Five 25 k.v.a, 600 volt static condensers with auto trans. formers to cost £l3l 10/. each, are to be purchased to replace those found unsuitable.
