I can tell you exactly when the cabbages lirst openly protested about the neglect th e y had Suffered through the re.awakening of the bowling season, but you know that had feeling smoulders awhil e before it breaks out into the flame of candid speech, so it would be difficult for me to say precisely when Jones answeied the call of the green and deserted the greens. From that date Mrs. Jones begot a jealous dislike of “Kitty" and marshalled her vocal forces on the side of the cabbages. The climax came two Saturdays ago. “John, are you off to bowls?" “Yes, m f dear.” “What about the cabbages?" “Get a man to put them in.” And so the cabbages were duly planted by a hired man, who made such a splendid job that he was there and then engaged by Mrs. Jones to notter round the whole of the gar. den. When Jones returned from his gala day. he found his wife In tears. “Oh, John," she sobbed, "those bowls —that man—no those bowls — they’re all gone—" “Not my bow’s —I’ve brought them home with me." "Not your bowls, John dear, but your dahlias —they're all ruined.” “What! thp dahlias?” gasped Jones “Those that T paid ten pounds for?. Where are they gone? “That awful man dug them all up and burnt them,” sobbed Mrs. Jones. "What man? Who told him to dig my dahlias-?” exclaimed the excited Tones. That evening found a much subdued bow'er pondering over the ruination of bowls and a page of his diary in which was written: To bowling, sub., £1 1/.; set of bowls, £7 7/.: jacket and flannels, £3; dahlias destroyed, £lO. “John, dear," Interrnnte,s his wily wife, “do you think I might have some heir» in the house for the next three months?"
