PERSONAL PARAGRAPHS.
Mr J. O. Batchelar, who recently met with an accident, is not progressing as well as could be desired. Mr Roy Kirker, of Wellington, well-known in the New Zealand Rifle Brigade in the war days, is at present on a visit to Palmerston North. Dr. G. M. Scott has been appointed acting medical superintendent ot Pukeora Sanatorium for a period of two months during the absence oa leave of Dr. G. Maclean. Messrs. L. R. Freeman and A. T. Bendall were elected members of the Chamber of Commerce at yesterday’s meeting, while the resignation of Mr J, McK. Jefferies was accepted with regret. The following visitors were accorded a hearty welcome at yesterday’s meeting of the Luncheon Club. Messrs H. J. Topal (Sydney), J. Wylie (Auckland), and J. Tollerton (Wellington). Mr Allan Hancock, of Bourke Street, is at present an Inmate of the Napier Hospital. A vote of sympathy with him in his illness was passed at last night’s meeting of the Manawatu Motor Club.
The memory of the late Captain Preece, N.Z. Cross, was honoured by members of the Luncheon Club yesterday, when a vote of sympathy with deceased’s relatives was carried. The Chamber of Commerce, at its meeting yesterday, also passed a vote of sympathy to the relatives. As a mark of respect to the lata Mr G. Torstonson the meeting of the Manawatu Motor Club adjourned last evening for five minutes. Mr Torstonson had been one of the club’s best and most willing workers, being a member since its inception and president from 1914 till 1921. Padre A. Greene, M.C., Salvation Army immigration officer, was a passenger to Auckland yesterday to meet the Rimutaka, arriving at the northern port on Friday with 300 immigrants. He recently returned from Australia where he had been spending furlough with his mother. Padre Greene will be remembered by those New Zealanders who served in the Eastern Theatre of the War for his great organising work in connection with gifts
Mr Arthur H. Ripley, the Auckland tenor, who arrived in Palmerston North yesterday to take part in Hadyn's “Creation” for the Palmerston North Choral Society on July 15, came straight from Whangarel where ho took 1 the solos in "Elijah” for the Waiata Society. After Palmerston North Mr Ripley leaves for New Plymouth to sing in “A Tale of Old. Japan” on July 16, returning to Auckland for private engagements, then back to New Plymouth for the Male Choir on August 25 and 26, Haivera 27th (“Haiawatha”), 'Wellington Choral Society, September 25 .(“Oberon”), also Whangarei, October 21 and Dargavillc, October 22 with the Lyric Quartette of Auckland.
