HOOKEY IN THE WET.

YESTERDAY’S MUD SCRAMBLE. Screams and shrieks echoed from the Sportsground yesterday afternoon, as the ladies playing the mid-week hockey competition skidded along the : greasy area, or landed in one of the numerous pools of water. Although rain had fallen almost continually all! (he morning, the competition was not, postponed, as apparently some of the | players thought it would have been, with the result that the three town , teams all played with only eight ladies, Foxton being the only team to have j the full complement. The players all appeared to enjoy the games, but ! there were many spills and a mother would have some difficulty in distinguishing her daughter as the players left the field covered from head to foot in mud.

Ladies’ Technical Old Girls’ gained another i win by defeating West End Gl ( ] Girls' | by 3 to t. The score at half-time was \ two —nil in favour of Technical, both goals being gained by Miss V. Isaacs. In the second spell, the game was fairly oven and each side added a goal. ; Miss E. Morgan shot a splendid goal : for West End, hut the team could not • equalise although it made very strenu--1 ous efforts to do so. However, towards the end of the,game, Miss M. . Davis added another to Technical’s 5 score and made the team feci more 1 confident.

Eoxton journeyed to Palmerston North and received a severe defeat, at ‘the hands of High School Old Girls. Old Girls were playing with three ladies short and for the best part of Hie first, spell it certainly looked as though the visitors wore going to inflict a defeat on them for the score was two —-nil and Old Girls’ had rarely visited their opponents’ goal-line. Miss M. Waters opened the aeocunt for the home team and shortly afterwards Miss G. Hands equalised (he scores made by Mrs. Ball for Eoxton. There was no further score until atfer the interval when the home team completely routed the visitors. Shortly after the commencement of the second spell, Miss I. McMinn gained the lead for Old Girls and a few minutes Inter Miss McKenzie notched another goal. Miss G. Hands added her second contribution, only to be followed by Miss McMinn doing likewise. The score read six—two and the last four goals had been made in fifteen minutes. Foxton put up a great fight, but ’/lie effort was short-lived and Miss L. MeSweeney added her goal to the score while a few minutes later Miss MeMinn gained her third goal, which made an average of a goal apiece for Old Girls. Shortly afterwards Mr. E. Cousins called time. C. and C; was pitted against Phoenix and in the first spell the former team gained the lead by three to two. Turner was the first to score, followed by Dickson notching a goal. Lundy made the score two —one In favour of C. and C., but Lloyd added a third score, to which Lundy retaliated by gaining his second goal. After the interval the game was very hard, but C. and C. established a further lead by Lloyd shooting his second goal. After this, Phoenix awakened and made strenuous efforts to win, but time intervened without any additional score to either side. Scvcn-Asifle Game.
