BUSES IN QUEEN STREET.
AUCKLAND CITY COUNCIL WITHIN BIGHTS. [Per Press Association.] AUCKLAND, Last Night. Mr Justice Reed, in his decision on th,e> application by the omnibus proprietors to quash the by-law prohibiting 'hxjT% plying in Queen Street, said: “ThcwSvidence of the traffic inspector satisfies me that motor omnibuses are the real cause of the congestion in Queen Street. It appears to me, however, that this congestion is only existent during working hours: that after 6.30 in the evening, on Sunday and those holidays on which the shops are closed, and commercial vehicles are not in use, that there is no reason why the exclusion should then apply.” His Honour held that in excluding the ’buses in Queen Street and prescribing the routes for the ’buses, the Council was acting - within its powers: that there was no substance in the allegations of unreasonableness.
Regarding the routes prescribed, he said the by-law should be amended In the direction of permitting the use of Queen'Street ,by ’buses after 0.30 p.m. and also on Sunday and holidays. The motion would be adjourned for further consideration and the City Council would submit an amendment in the direction indicated.
