At the New Zealanders’ annual dinner, the sequence of which has been Interrupted since 1914, Sir James Allen presided. The guests included Mr Amery, Lords Jellicoe, Islington, Ranfurly, Liverpool and Clarendon. Sir Thomas Parkinson, the Hon. W. Pember Reeves and the High Commissioners.
Mr Coates cabled cordial greetings, adding; “New Zealand stands four square with the Mother Country In making for Empire unity. It will be my earnest effort to carry on the Imperial policy Mr Massey so ardently followed.” Earl Jellicoe referred to his unforgettable time in New Zealand telling “every wretched Englishman” he did not know what sport was until he had tackled New Zealand trout and red deer. His wife was worrying her friends, insisting that there was no butter like that of New Zealand, and no wool to prevent influenza like that of New Zealand. He wished New Zealand could absorb fifty times more immigrants to enable more to enjoy the wonderful country.
