RIVER PROTECTION.
CONSIDERATION OF OBJECTIONS A sitting of the Assessment Court was held at Palmerston North yesterday to consider appeals against the classification of rateable properties in the district of the ManawatuOriua River Board. Messrs J. L. Stout, S.M., O. Monrad (Palmerston North), and H. E. Leighton (Wellington), occupied the Bench. Various counsel appeared for the appellants, who numbered 44 ot which four were withdrawn, while -1 applications were thrown out through their being filed late. In support of the latter, Mr Grant said that the notice pertaining to the classification list was irregular and not in accordance with the provisions of the Act. _ , Mr Baldwin, solicitor to the Board said it was important to the Board that the matter of classification be settled as early as possible. The Boarc. had no funds, and could strike nc rate until the classification was deal, with. .. Mr Stout said that the matter o. the alleged irregularity would have tc be looked into, and on that point tin Court adjourned until this morning t.c hear legal argument on the matter. The standing objections will bi heard on Friday week.
