CAMBRIDGE RUGGER BLUE

NOTED FOOTBALLER ANDCRICKETEK IN PALMERSTON NORTH. With the Nelson Collegial® as manager is Mr K. R. J. Saxon, a master of the famous South Island ■lsland scholastic institution, who took his degree at Cambridge University. Mr Saxon got Ills blue at Rugby and played in the great match with Oxford in 1919 and 1921. The forniei year saw the first pre-war fixture, staged at Queen’s Club and Cambridge won 7__s (a potted goal and a’penalty goal to a converted try). In 1921 Tom Lawton made his'debut for Oxford and owing to the. absence of the Cambridge' ■ five-eighth Saxon was moved in from, three-quarter to marK Lawton. The Queensland ..Rhodes scholar .was a trifle too hefty for the Nelsonian and Saxo'n spent a sultry afternoon, as. Oxford, won by 11 points to 5 (three tries to one), Lawton being the king-pin of the attack. The 1921 game was the first ’Varsity match played at Twickenham. ’ ; Saxon has . been a prolific scorer in Nelson cup cricket and his 66 for the province against McLaren’s team brought him Dominion wide notice. It was not surprising, therefore,, that Canterbury should honour Nelson with a call on Saxon’s services for the match with Macartney’s Australian eleven last season, when he justified selection by a fine knock of 43 runs. In speaking of the possibilities of Raymond end Lawton playing for England, Saxon is of opinion that there is no particular objection in Home Rugby circles to the inclusion of Colonials in the English fifteen. The trouble over Lawton a few years back would not have kept that player out of internationals had the English selectors considered him good enough. This is borne out by the fact that ISaxon himself was reserve for England for the whole of one season.
