Competency: Mervyn Gibbs. A special prize for painting and drawing has been awatded Ethel Birchley, of Standard VI., Terrace End school, by Mr O’Connor. LONGBURN. The break-up function of the Longburn School, which gave promise of a large- attendance was considerably marred by-wet weather, but, in spite of this an energetic committee led by Mr C. C. Hills and his staff successfully carried through the whole programme. f i It is to the credit, of the district that the whole of the funds required for the day—some, £25 —was , subscribed voluntarily in the space of a fortnight, and such generosity is typical of the great interest and the backing the teachers and school have had. Mr Hills, in presenting the p'tizes, apologised for the absence of - the chairman and secretary of the committee, who were both unavoidably absent, and thanked everybody on behalf of the committee and staff for their assistance in making the function a success.

Dick Learmonth, captain of the school football club, in a neat little speech, presented the headmaster with a handsome shaving set as a token of esteem and goodfellowship which existed between the boys and their teacher. Mr Hills, in a brief address, thanked the boys and girls, and expressed the hope that those leaving would remain his life-long friends. ■' Other members of the staff, Misses I. Davey and M. E. OARNCOT. The annual break-up ceremony of the Carncot School was held yesterday, when there was a large number of parents and friends present. The prizes were presented by Miss Stanford, the founder of the school, who gave a brief history of the institution. During the afternoon, musical items and exhibitions of drill were given by the children. Prize List. The sports prizes were given by Mr Martyu Abraham, who is an ex-pupli of the school. SCHOOL CONCERT. A GREAT SUCCESS, The annual concert took place In the Town Hall on Thursday evening. Despite heavy rain a full house,greeted the scholars to witness one of the

best school concerts yet held. The stage was prettily decorated and was most pleasing. The whole of the items were particularly well- done. Che part singing by the senior scholars conducted by the headmaster (Mr F. A. Mason) was especially good, as also were the nursery rhymes by the mfants. No encores were given, but if the audience had had their way each would have been repeated. The whole staff arc to be complimented o'a the splendid success of the entertainment. the proceeds of which are in aid of the library fund, and the takings being £32 odd. At the conclusion Mr Mason thanked the parents a"nd friends for their sqpport. After the concert Mr and Mrs Mason entertained the staff at supper at their residence, occasion being taken lo farewell Miss D. Bird who has been relieving during the past six weeks. Mr Mason thanked the staff for their cooperation in school work during the year and Mr Warwick replied, the singing of “Auid Lang Syne” concluding a happy evening. FOXTON.

Foxton State School broke up on Wednesday afternoon, when Father Christmas paid his annual visit and distributed toys to the infants. Despite the rain there was a good attendance of parents. Mr ’Mason, headmaster, addressed those present and referred to the excellent work done during the year, despite the changes in the staff and an epidemic oi measles, which interefered with the attendance. He referred to the necessity for secondary education at the school and swimming baths, ana touched on other matters of import, ance to the educational welfare of the scholars. Mr J. K. Hornl/ow, chairman of the committee, before presenting the prizes, congratulated the staff and children on the year’s work, and referred to the Walter Bock memorial prizes for the dux boy and girl, to be awarded each year from the fund sei aside for that purpose. Cheers were given for the prizewinners, headjnaster and staff. Father Christmas (Mr Perreau), received a groat ovation and spoice cheerily to the infants assembled in their class room, where he distributed gifts from a well-laden tree.
