MEETING OF NEW PARLIAMENT DEALING WITH GROWING UNEMPLOYMENT. [By Electric Cable —Copyright.] [Aust. and N /, Cable Association 1 CAPETOWN, July 25. The Assembly met this morning Mr Jansen being unanimously elected Speaker. Parliament was opened in the afternoon, at which the Gover-nor-General’s Speech said that the session was intended merely for passing the Estimates and minor legislative measures that were consdered urgent, and, inter alia, tha Government will repeal the tax on patent medicines and amend the tobacco tax, which contributed to the downfall or the Smuts Government. The House will also re-enact retrospectively the Act controlling rents, which expired on June 30. The Speech refers to the growing distress which had caused unemployment, to the drought and locusts, provision for which was made in the Estimates. A Department of Labour will be inaugurated to remedy the continued widespread unemployment, and encouragement will be given to industrial, agricultural, and development work together with a careful establishment of land settlements. The Estimates for expenditure for the current year were tabled, totalling £24,346,000.
