BANKRUPT CONTRACTOR.

MEETING OF CREDITORS. A meeting of creditors in the bankrupt estate of John Brcmner, contractor, of Feiiding, was held in Palmerston North, yesterday when there were present the bankrupt and his solicitor, Messrs. F. L. Wildbore, F. •Kendall, J. Adams, J. S. Edelsten and solicitor (Mr Eliott), Reid (represehting Mrs Barker), W. H. Christensen (representing Feiiding Harness Co.). In his original statement the bankrupt said the commencement of his troubles was in 1919,‘when he entered into an agreement for the purchase of a property of 40 acres from Mr-A. M. Barker, for £2IOO, paying £IOO of his wife’s money, and leaving the remaining £2OOO owing at 6 per cent, interest till July, 1925. His farming operations were a failure, and after vainly endeavouring to make it pay, he sold it (o a Dir Lcgg for £2515. After an unsuccessful farming career he took on contracting, but was ultimately forced to file. In ’a statement to (he meeting the bankrupt said he had not paid Mrs Barker because he thought the storekeepers had first claim, and that Mr Lcgg should pay her himself. He did not have a bank account except at the G.P.0., and his wife kept the books. When he started lie had no money of his own, borrowing sonic from his wife. He did not think of making the property in her name. When ho sold the farm ho handed practically all the money to Mrs Brcmner. Bankrupt further inferred that all his purchases wore made with his wife’s money. None of the creditors now interested were creditors when lie handed the money to his wife. Ho claimed that Logg was indebted to him for £B7 3/-. He (Mr Legg) was paying £1 10/ for having his cows milked and was not doing'any work, and the bankrupt considered ho should bo able to pay, particularly as he was a single man. No resolutions wore passed.
