WEST END SCHOOL.

MEETING OF COMMITTEE.

At the regular meeting of the West End School Committee those present were: Messrs C. H Whitehead (in the chair), J. Rose, J. B. Proud, H. Mouldey, W. E. Presnall, F. Carpenter, G. Lyno and the headmaster (Mr A # W. Thompson). A letter was received from tha Wanganui Education Board granting the school a new clack, and advising of its approval of minor alterations in equipment'.—Received.

Tho West End Old Pupils' Association) forwarded for competition two sports cups to. be awarded to the best boy and girl sport in the school each year by conditions laid down. The total marks that* can be awarded arc not to exceed 250, and will be awarded to boys for prowess in football, cricket, field athletics, swimming and leadership, and to girls for hockey, basket ball, swimming, running, and leadership.—The trophies were receiv. ed with thanks.

The headmaster reported that the roll on September 30, stood at 387; the average attendance for the quarter had been 329.2, and t'ho average roll during that period 381. Influenza had affected the attendance. The ventilation had been greatly improved by windows being made to open on the Quadrangle. A donation of 110 flowering shrubs had been received from Mr B. H. Jußt, and Mr A. E. Blackbourne had made a donation to. the sports fund, which is was proposed should be used in securing a banner for the basket-ball teams. A quantity of grass seed, including 111 varieties, had been received from Mr E.. Mange. These had been planted out in the school experimental plots, and would afford much valuable material far observation. The girls' hockey team had won the inter-schools cup. Dr. E. Gunn and Mr Skinner, attendance ofHo*r, had visited the school.—The committee, in adopting the report, passed a hearty vote of thanks to the donors for their gifts.-
