ALL SAINTS' HOME.
OR VICE-REGAL ENTERTAINMENT.
COUNCIL COMPROMISES.
When a deputation consisting o£ Messrs. E. R. B. Holben, A. Skerman, and D. Pringle, representing tho committee of All Saints' Home, waited on the Borough Council last evening for a remission of their annual rates or failing that, a grant, a curious comparison was unwittingly made by the Town Clerk. Mr Holben placed the request of the committee before the Council and enumerated its good services, dwelling on its wide importance,, after which the Deputy Mayor (Cr. Jackson) said tho application for a grant was too
late for the current year, as the estimates had already been prepared.
Cr. Graham then moved that 15 guineas be donated to the Home from unauthorised expenditure and it bo asked to pay the rates.
The Town Clerk said that as only £250 had been provided for in unauthoris: 1 expenditure, care would have to be exercised in its disposal. The Governor-General, ho pointed out, was coming: along, and they did not know who else would turn up later and involve more expense. Perhaps, he suggested, the Council would be better advised to. remit the rates for this year. The Council finally decided to grant the Home £lO, one councillor remarking (sotto voce): "All Saints' Home versus Governor-General."
