BOARD OF TRADE.
When the vote for the Industries and Commerce department was under consideration in the House on Friday afternoon several members had hard things to say about the policy and administration of the department. Mr Forbes, the member for Huranui, wanted to know what had become of the Board of Trade, and what arrangements had been made for the performance of its functions since its disappearance. The Board, he said, had been given great opportunities to serve the country and had- utterly failed to make use of them. The Hon. J. A. Hanan also made inquiries concerning the whereabouts of tho Board of Trade and the discharge of its duties. Profiteering, the member for Invercargill declared, was still rampant in the country a.nd some one in authority should be looking after the interests of the public. Mr Veitch, the member for Wanganui, added his complaint to those of the other members. The Hon. W. Downle Stewart, the Minister in Charge, replying to the criticism levelled against bis department, said he had a Bill in preparation which would reconstitute the Board of Trade, and strengthen the machinery for the protection of the interests of the public.
