THE BUTTER POOL,

The Agricultural and Stock Committee practically concluded taking evidence in regard to the Dairy Produce Control Bill last week, and is expected to present Its report to the House within the next few days. The Hon. W. Nosworthy, Minister of Agriculture, who is a very active supporter of the Bill, is speeding matters up and has announced his intention to have the Committee's report considered by the House at the earliest possible moment. That the report will be favourable to the Bill, compulsory clauses and all, there now can he little doubt, Both sides have been conducting a very vigorous canvass of members of Parliament, and early last week the indications were that a compromise would be reached by expunging the compulsory clauses of the Bill, and making provision for a shipping and marketing board. This was understood to be Mr Massey’s solution of the problem. But since then the promoters of the “pool” have been gaining ground and to-day the opposition is disposed to regard its case as hopeless. Both the Reform and the Liberal members are divided on the question, but the Labour members are said to be casting in their lot with the friends of the Bill on the grounds that pooling is a step towards State control.
