NEW HEBRIDES.
FRENCH CLAIMS REFUTED, A MISSIONARY’S CHARGES. [By Electric Cable —Copyright.] [Aust. and N.Z. Cable Association.] Received Wednesday 7 p.ra.) SYDNEY, May 16. The Rev. Gunn, a former missionary in the New Hebrides, in a letter to the newspapers, traverses the French claims made by M. Pognon. Mr Gunn says the proposals are unsatisfactory and unfair, as the French have no set. tiers on the islands south of Vila, and it is questionable if they own as much land as they claim, He states the French do not own a square foot in Aneityum Rutunt, or Aniwa, and some other islands. He declares the majority of the natives in the north, ern islands would if asked, prefer British rule. Mr Gunn publishes a letter received from the chiefs of Rutuna t declaring that a French recruiting ship takes women for immoral purposes, distributing liquor with a view to enticing recruits, thus causing the ruination of the islanders. The chiefs plead that stops should be taken to stop these practices.
