JUBILEE CELEBRATIONS, UNIQUE. PROCESSION TO CATHEDRAL. A LARGE CONGREGATION, [Per Press Association.] CHRISTCHURCH, Last Night. The oiflcial celebrations in connection with the jubilee of Canterbury College were commenced to.day, when delegates from other Universities and graduates of the college and under, graduates marched in procession from the College to the Ccthedral. The numerical strength of the procession was between seven and eight hundred, and the spectacle was absolutely unique in the history of the city. The many.coloured hoods of the dozens of Universities made a vivid splash of colour in the which was packed by a vast crowd. Archbishop* Julius preached an in. spiring sermon, in which he paid a tribute to the work of Canterbury College iu the past and made a plea for the recognition of instruction iu religion by the University. Oxford and Cambridge were originally founded for the instruction of poor men who desired to enter the priesthood, but in New Zealand these were the only men. whom the University did not recognise.
