SOME STARTLING EVIDENCE. (Per Press Association.) DUNEDIN, Last Night. There was a surprise in the hearing yesterday afternoon of a charge against James Proctor Nicholson, who pleaded not guilty to false pretences in connection with "Ringing In" the trotting mare Dora Derby. The surprise was the change in the evidence of the chief witness, Archibald Campbell Sim, who had already pleaded guilty to a similar charge. Sim stated that he bought a mare for £25, and he and Nicholson arranged to buy a better mare resembling the first one, Dora Derby being selected. To complete the resemblance Dora Derby's tail was docked and her ear split. The first horse was then destroyed. Witness further stated that his brother sold the mare to a drover, but she was got back and destroyed, because rumours were afloat. Witness was proceeding to describe the drover.

His Honour: "You had better not emulate Nicholson in his description of the Imaginary Davis. Was there any such man as drover ? " After some hesitation, witness answered in the n'egativel reaffirming, however, that the mare was dead and that it was shot by him last February. The case then adjourned; NOTES. Treadwell /generally acts well in the heavy going. It will be remembered that she won well at the Foxton meeting in the mud. Mosthenes is to be qualified for hunters' hurdles. The five-year-old stallion Will Somers (by Black Jester-Vervaine) has been presented by King George to the Canadian Government for stud purposes. Will Somers was a useful racehorse, winning once at three years and four times last year. As has been printed more than once, the Prince of Wales has a small stud farm in Canada. Killashandra, which has been granted a 14.2 certificate in Sydney, was awarded 9.3 in the first race in which he was nominated. Trotting at Forbury Park to-day. Latest reorts mention the track being in good order. The state of the track at Hawera yesterday was responsible for a number of supposed good things getting beaten. Horses from the Auckland province had a good spin at Hawera yesterday. Red Helen is a good sort, and is likely to go on with the business. When your trousers bag at the knees and your coat and vest look creased, bring them to Collinson and Cunninghame's for treatment on the Hoffman steam press. Sterilises, rejuvenates and presses perfectly. Suits 3/, trousers 2/.*
