MANAWATU ATHLETIC CLUB

ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting of the Manawatu Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club was held in the Municipal Hall last night. Air H. L. Young (vice-pre-sident) took the chair in the absence of tho president, Mr H. R. Cooper. ANNUAL REPORT. The president, in his annual report, stated, inter alia, that the membership list was made up of 70 active members and 41 honorary members, plus ollicers, members of executive, and nonactive members, a grand total of 159. The afternoon meetings held during the season had not been a financial success. The Springbok meeting, also, although a sutvess in every way, did not benefit the club financially, as the whole of the profit had to be handed over to IHe New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association. However, it gave the sport a great fillip with the public. Five evening meetings and four road races were field during the .season, and the following were placed in their respective divisions. For the aggregate points cup K. Glendinning gained 16 pouts, winning the Caledonian Cup and gold medal; W. Wilton was second with 14 points, and ,1. Norris third with 12 points. For the Boomerang Cycle Cup S. Hayes won with 6 points, and W. Peterson and R. King tied for second place. Owing to the lack of entries the third race for the latter cup was not held. During the season the club was fortunate in being presented with tho following cups, etc.; Glaxo Cup, presented by the Glaxo Co. for the public schools’ competition; the Caledonian Cup, presented by the Caledonian Society for aggregate points, to be competed for annually, and the Boomerang Cup for aggregate points in cycle road races; Messrs Watt and Markland kindly presented the club with a bicycle, and Messrs Cllffc and Remington presented a gold medal. To the donors of the foregoing and others who assisted financially and otherwise, the club ex, pressed its hearty appreciation for their kindness.

The chairman, in moving tho adoption of tho report, said that although the credit balance was not large, the club was in a healthy position. The number of assets was large, and the club should be well ahead next year. The club had achieved a good deal in the revival of athletics.

Mr J. 11. Watt, iu seconding the adoption of the report, said that the club should be congratulated on the position it had attained.

The balance-sheet showed a credit of £3 7/5, assets worth £7B 7/7, and no liabilities. ELECTION OP OFFICERS.

Griffen, and K. Hodder. Mr W. O. Harrington was re-elected hon. auditor. GENERAL. Mr W. Brady urged that fuller support be given the cycling section in the way of more substantial prizes. Cycling was expensive to take up, and the inducements were not sufficient. He suggested that a meeting be held at the Showgrounds instead of at. the Sportsground. as a better gate would probably be obtained there. It was decided that it be made a suggestion to the incoming committee that the next meeting be held in the Showgrounds. As the delegate of the Palmerston North Y.M.C.A., Mr K. Hodder said that his association intended to form an athletic club and wished to affiliate under the iuanawatu Centre. The assiciation would he thought, toe able to do much to help on athletics in the Manawatu. Two new members were elected. At a subsequent meeting of the executive Mr T. Stubbs was appointed the club’s handicapper.
