THE RAILWAY SERVICE
FURTHER CUT ANTICIPATED. (Per Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. Tho hint of a further cut in the railway service is contained in a letter received from Mr R. W. McYllly,. General Manager of Railways, by the organiser of the Canterbury Progress League. "With reference to your letter of November ISth, regarding the duration of the present curtailed train service, it is difficult to forecast for long,’’ says Mr McVilly. "It will be necessary to limit the service. Unfortunately the decline in traffic still continues, and th* tendency appears to bo in the direction of a further falling off. No alteration will be made until the Christmas holiday season. In any case, and if the business does not improve after then, it / is quite possible that serious consideration will require to be given to a further curtailment. Up to date tho South Island main lines show a deficit of over £II,OOO as between the revenue and working expenses, without taking interest charges into consideration at all. In these circumstances, you will appreciate the difficulty with which the Department is confronted in the matter of making both ends meet.”
