BOROUGH AFFAIRS.

MEETING OF THE COUNCIL. The Borough Council met last evening. Present: The Mayor (Mr J. A. Nash, M.P.), and Crs. M. H. Oram, A. J. Graham, C. F. Spooner, H. J. Canton, F. Needham, F. Jackson, M. A. Eliott, and S. R. Lancaster. CORRESPONDENCE. From W. H. Ware, electrical inspector, stating that since his last visit on October 21st no further notifications of wiring from electrical contractors have been received, and he is therefore under the impression that very little is doing at present—hardly sufficient to justify the expense of another trip just now, but he hopes to visit Palmerston North again at the end of the month. — Agreed to. From G. A. Priest and Co., submitting a property consisting of f9* acres situated near the proposed new railway station and fronting Boundary Road, as a suitable site for the new gas works. —It was decided to write stating that the Council are not buyers at the present time. From the Mayor of Nelson, stating that the Nelson City Council contemplates placing an order at Home for a shipment of cast-iron water mains, and inquiring if this Council if in need of any would be prepared to join in placing a joint order in England so that advantageous terms both as to price and freight might be secured. —The Mayor: Our experience so far has been that it is cheaper to buy pipes from Australia. —The engineer said no pipes were required at the present time and in any case there was no money for the purpose. When they did buy they only purchased in small lots. —It was decided to notify the Nelson Council that the Council could not accept their offer. From the Native Trustee, intimating that it is proposed to subdivide section 228, Rangitikei Sreet, and inquiring if the Council would undertake the work of the construction and formation of the street. The expense of same will be borne by the Department.—lt was decided to call tenders for the work after the cost had been paid into the Council. From residents Florence Avenue, asking that the footpath in the street be tarred and sanded. —Referred to the engineer for a report. PUBLIC HEALTH. The Public Health Committee made the following recommendations: —(1) That clause 2 in the inspector's report, with reference to the cleaning up of dirty back yards, be adopted. (2) That the inspector confer with the borough solicitor regarding the Berving of a notice on the owners of the premises situated at the corner of George and Cuba Streets, with a view of having such premises demolished. (3) That the medical officer of health be asked to inspect and.report on the condition of the stables situated in Broad Street. (4) That a reward of 3d per head be offered for all rats caught in the borough and delivered to the caretaker of the rubbish tip. RESERVES COMMITTEE.

The reserves committee reported Inter alia-as under: —Mr Hodder, representing the Northern Bowling and Croquet Club, waited on the Committee and asked that certain work be carried out on the new bowling and croquet greens." It was decided provided the Club will forego the £SO granted by the Council and to be paid during next year to provide and erect posts and wire netting required for the tennis courts, and to request the Gas Department to lay on the gas and supply the necessary fittings. The committee recommended that the borough engineer and curator be authorised to carry out the work of tarring and sanding the path through the native bush in the Esplanade, as mentioned in the curator's report CURATOR'S REPORT. The curator reported as under: — Sportsground: The installation of the new water supply recently granted by the Council has been carried, out, and a good pressure secured. After some

trouble, owing to wet weather, the grounds are now in good condition for cricket. Pitches on the outside section are being prepared as time permits. North Street Park football field: This has been rolled with the motor roller, and the effect is very good. The hockey and bowling greens have been cut and rolled several times, and. the bowling green has been top-dressed with manure. Arrangements have been made to have the gates and the fence fronting North Street be erected. The fence now on North Street frontage will be moved back so as to fence q/f the bowling green section from that portion now in oats. Fitzherbert Street bowling greens: These are now in good playing order. A portion of the large croquet lawn has been diverted to tennis use, and is evidently meeting with good support. The bowling green has been manured, and is now being lightly top-dressed with soil. OPERA HOUSE. The Opera House committee recommended that as the quotations received for a new piano were considered too high, it was decided to leave in the hands of the Mayor and the chairman the matter of purchasing a good second-hand piano; and that Mr Danahey be notified that the instrument when placed in the Opera House must not be removed from the orchestral well without the permission of the Council, and that same must be kept well covered when not in use. TRANSIT COMMITTEE. The transit committee recommended: (1) That representatives of advertising firms be invited to confer with the committee on the matter of letting the advertising rights on the • busses, and (2) that the ventilation of the 'busses be improved.—The report was adopted.
