LADIES' TOL'RXAMEN T. The Manawatu Ladies' Golf Club's annual tournament was commenced on the Hokowhitu links yesterday. Though, a high wind made good play difficult, the other conditions were splendid, the course being- in great order and the greens running last and true. Nothing very brilliant is expected on the lirst clay of a tournament and the scores handed in were up to the average for flrst-day performances. The best gross score was put in by Mrs G. Williams, whose 86 was a very creditable round. Her lirst half was especially good, as she completed in 39. The qualifying round brought out keen competition for the last two places, five players tying. The arrangements were in the capable bands of Miss D. Blackmore as secretary and Mrs L. Seifert as club captain, and they were carried out with complete success. In the qualifying round for the championship, Mrs L. Seifert, Mrs Junes. Miss Blackmore, Miss P. Sim and Mrs Monckton tied for the two last places. Four holes had to be played before a decision " was reached, Mrs Seifert and Miss Blackmore Idling the positions.

The first round of the championship resulted as under: Miss Gam brill beat Miss Anderson, 3 up and 2; Miss Moore beat Mrs L. Seifert, 6 and 5; Miss Wright beat Mrs Tingey, 3 and 1; Mrs R. Abraham beat Mrs Broderick, 6 and 4; Miss Harris beat Miss Blackmore on the 19th green; Miss Brandon beat Miss Wenley, 3 and 2; Mrs Collinson beat Mrs Widdup, 4 and 3; Mrs Guy Williams beat Miss Bell, 1 up. To-day Miss Gambrill will meet Miss Moore, Mißs Wright v. Mrs. R. Abraham, Miss Harris v. Miss Brandon, Mrs Collinson v. Mrs GWilliams. OTHER COMPETITIONS. In the medal competition, played in the morning, Miss D. Anderson and Mrs Broderick tied for first place, with 78 net; Mrs P. Sim, with 81 net, being third. The best cards were: Miss D. Anderson £B—lo —7B, Miss Broderick 99 —21 —78; Mrs P. Sim 102 —21 —81, Miss Moore. 94 —12—82, Mrs Tingey 96 —14—82, Miss G. Seifert 104 —21 — 83. Mrs G. Williams. 86—3 —S3, Mrs L. Seifert 102 —IS —S 4, Miss Collinson 103 —19—S4, Miss West Miss Wright S6 —I—So.1—So. Teams competition:—Manawatu A (Miss Moore 94, Miss Blackmore 102, Mrs Collinson 9 7 and Miss S. Watson 104) 397 and Manawatu B (Mrs R. Abraham 97, Mrs limes 102, Mrs Tingey 96 and Miss L. Seifert 102) 397, equal 1; Wellington A (Miss Brandon 90, Miss Bell 95, Miss Ward 113 and Mrs Weston 10S) 406, 3.

Approaching' and putting - :—Mrs W. Seifert, Mrs King - , Miss Moore, Miss Gambrill and Mrs Collinson tied with six strokes each. The tie will be played off to-day. Three tied in the putting- competition. This will also be played oft' today. Driving- competition:—Miss Gambrill (188yds 2 ft)' 1, Miss Anderson (177ycls) 2, Miss Wenley (172yds) 3, Miss Wright (107yds) •!.- TO-DAY'S ARRANGEMENTS. A four-ball bogey competition will be played in the afternoon. Players must enter in pairs on the list in the club house.
