(By "Avis.") The Marton Jockey Club's spring meeting is to be held to-day. Splendid acceptances have been received, and a good day's sport should result. A special train leaves Palmerston North at 9.10 this morning, returning at 5.25. The first event, which starts at 11.30. will be the Hack Hurdles, for which there is a field of eighteen. Ruddy, who has the top-weight, is sure to ba well supported. Royal Exchange and Sir Rosebery will also carry a lot of money, while The Baronet may run into a place. In the Trial Hack Plate, considerable interest will be centred in the running of Messrs Riddiford Bros.' imported horse Whcatfield (Buckwheat— Amplamina). This three-year-old. »wlth Tinihanga, Believe, and Achillion, may be prominent in the race. The Hack Steeplechase has produced a field of eleven. Of these, Te Toa, Ore Ore, and Golden Glade read as well as anything. Fourteen or fifteen horses, including several N.Z. Cup candidates, Will face the starter in the Marton Handicap. The top-weight (Rouen) will carry a lot of money, but Admiral Codrington and Strategy will take a lot of beating. In the Electric Hack Handicap. Grotesque will be a strong public fancy. Tolerance and Makere may make the pace a cracker. The former will be ridden by C. Emerson. There are eight acceptors for the Rangitikei Steeplechase, in which Tirau and Oakleigh will not be started. Of t,he remainder, First Line and Mattock may receive most support. In the Railway Handicap there is a field of thirteen, including such good performers as Amythas, Malhoa, The Hawk, and Humbug. The probabilities are that Amythas and The Hawk will make a great race of it in the straight. The Tutaenui Hack Welter is the last race of the day. In this event Halycon and Admiration may run prominently. Mr T. Eaves, owner of Volo and Income, is leaving this week on a holiday trip to Sydney. Ho will miss 'the Avondale meeting, where Yolo is to race in the Cup. Sparrowhawk, dam of The Hawk, died last week at the Kinloch stud. Her death is a severe loss to her owner, Mr J. F. foal, The Hawk, had given her a great advertisement as a brood mare. « PJxcellent acceptances have been received for the Manawatu Hunt Club's meting, to be held at Feilding on September 17th. The Wairarapa Racing Club has restricted its membership to 300. Mr W. E. Bidwill has been re-elected president of the Club.
