OVER THE RANGE.

[The "Times" car leaves Palmer., ston North at 4.30 o'clock each morning:, and runs' via Ashhurst and Woodville, to Dannevirke, and returning via Te Rehunga and Kiritaki to Woodville, and thence to Palmerston North via the Gorge, 85 miles each day. The Notes below are supplied by our Travelling Representative, with headquarters at Dannevirke. DANNEVIRKE. Mr Gordon Pettigrew, of Waipukurau, who was with the British Flying ..Corps in France and Russia, has been .transferred to the charge of the stock department of the Dannevirke branch of the Loan.and Mercantile Company. Library subscribers total 404, being 56 more than in April of 1920. In the past month 26 new works of fiction were obtained. Penalties are to be en. forced on those who have failed to return books. The Borough Council has expressed its appreciation of the services of the library committee. Two deaths are recorded —Mrs Ann M. Henderson, an old resident, and relict of the late John Anderson, aged 87 years, at the residence of her daughter, Mrs Christiansen, Dannevirke. At NorsewQod, the infant son of Mr and Mrs W. A. Mackie. School elections: Raumati. —Messrs Withey (chairman). Smith (secretary), Jacques, Dennis and McKenzie. A sum( of £134 was spent during the past year, and there is a -balance oi £29. Resolved, to obtain framed poitraits of Royalty; to have school roll of honour brought up to date, and to hold series of socials. Ngamoku.Messrs E. Fredericksen (chairman), C. Robinson (secretary), Stewart. Logan and! Thokilsen. A dance and supper followed the meeting.

Weber, the place of big holdings, has only gained eight people in five years; total, 428, against 420 in 1916. Akitio has lost 201. Total 1220, compared with 1421 in 191.6.

Mr and Mrs Thompson,' teachers at Horoeka and Pukchinau respectively, have been appointed to Makaira and Hukanui.

Horoeka is again having mail troubles, owing to the present contractor having to leave his tenement. Mr J. Norton, a guarantor, presided over a meeting,, and read a telegram from the Department, insisting that the ser.vice should be carried out. Resolved, that in the meantime, the settlers themselves do the job. The price is £l5O per annum, £l3O from the Department, and £2O from settlers. The installation of the Mayor and Councillors took place this evening in the presence of the ex-Mayor, exCouncillors, Mr McNicol, M.P., the Borough staff and leading citizens. The following three committees were set up: Gas and Lighting, Crs. MacGibbon (chairman), A. J. Runciman and L. Stein; Works: Crs. W. Dofoson (chairman), D. Drummond and J. H. Fairhurst; Finance: Crs.Bott (chairman), Hartgill «nd Snell. Cr. MacGibbon was appointed Deputy Mayor. A motion of sympathy was extended to Cr. Bolt who is at present in hospital. The Town Clerk presented a report of last year's work. Crs. Mac Gibbon and Runciman and the Gas Manager, (Mr Johnston) also presented reports of the operations of the Gas Works since it became a Municipal concern nearly a year ago. * At the conclusion of the business, a large number of citizens were the guests of the Mayor at. a banquet in the Council Chamber of the Town Hall. A long toast list was honoured, and numerous musical items given. The Anzac orchestra provided the music.

To-day's football fixtures were played in bad weather, they resulted: Seniors Excelsior 3, beat Woodville 0; Athletic 6, beat Ruahine 3. Juniors: Woodville 23, beat Athletic 0; Old Boys 6, beat Uniteds 4; Ruahine 6, beat Excelsior 0. Thirds: Excelsior 3, tied with High School* PAHIATUA, Every now and then, great alarm is expressed at the decrepit state of the traffic bridge between the town and the railway. Each big flood gives the ancient structure' a shaking up, and undermines the piles. Some years ago, the spans were shortened, and an endeavour was made to confine the channel of the erratic river. All this, cost a lot of money. One of these days, the bridge will be found on its way to Foxton Heads.

Milk-ho! The price of the lacteal fluid has jumped to 7d. Years ago, a literary and debating Society flourished in Pahiatua, and under its auspices annual musical and elocutionary competitions were held. Another attempt is now being made to form a society, though much of the talent which kept the old society alive has disapperea. .

Population of Pahiatua County, 3088 —1620 males and 1468 females. It has now been decided not to insert the names of fallen soldiers on the local war memorial, which Is to be erected in one of the garden squares.

Football results.—Seniors: Mangatoinaka 6 v. Eketahuna 0; Konini 6 v. Ngaturi 3; Hamua 12 v. Hukanui 5. Juniors: Marigatainoka 6 v. Man. gamutu 3; Eketahuna 13 v. Kaitaroa 0; Nueaha 42 v. Hostinell 0; Konini forfeited to Hamua.

The Pahiatua hospital buildings and plant, according to the report of the Inspector-General of Hospitals, require a good deal of attention to bring them up-to-date. They are lacking in several respects, and the present temporary nurses' home is unsatisfactory, being but a make-shift affair.

The population of Pahiatua county is given as 3088, a decrease of 22 on the 1916 figures.

WOODVILLE.

Census returns give the population of Woodville county as ISfiS, and of the borough 1150 —total, 301 S, an increase of 121 over the 1916 census. Males predominate, except in the Kumeroa riding and Woodville borough. The Woodville District Jockey Club has presented the A. and P. Associa. tion with a ten guinea cup, to be allotted as the Association thinks fit. Mr S. Bolton, patron, has been made an honorary life member of the Association. January 24th and 25th have been fixed as the dates of the next show. The president (Mr Gaisford) and the secretary were warmly congratulated on the success of the last show, to which their work substantially contributed.
