BUSH FIRES.

WORST SINCE 180 S. [By Electric Cables— Copyright.] (Aust. and N.Z. Cable Association.] (Received Wednesday, 11.10 pm.) MELBOURNE. Last Night. The bush fires have been extinguished by heavy rain, after sweeping through almost the whole of Gippsland since the great fires or 1898. Women and children had to be taken into the towns for safety. Many of the districts had all their communications cut, and the township of Foster was the only one saved and that was accomplished with difficulty. A railway train in Beech forest caught fire, and was compelled to continue at full speed till water was reached, when the fire was extinguished. Although the damage is extensive, the details so far are meagre.
